Bricklayer, Tilers added to SOL

Immigration has announced that Chefs, bricklayers and wall and floor tilers will be added to the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) from July 1.  No existing occupations are being removed from the SOL, which currently lists 188 occupations that Australia needs.

The chief immigration adviser of VisaMaster has the following comments:

  1. It is interesting to see Chef instead of Cook is added to SOL.  Generally speaking, in Australia Chef require at least Diploma qualification, while Cook only requires Cert IV.  Chef is an associate profession  and generally requires more years of experience than Cook. However, ultimately it is up to TRA to determine the skill assessment criteria, which will be announced by TRA after 1 July. VisaMaster will provide an update when the time comes;
  2. It is interesting to see Bricklayer and Wall and Floor Tiler are added to SOL.  Search on  Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) indicates currently Holmesglen TAFE is the only institute in Victoria, which offers these courses to international students.
  3. It is expected Holmesglen TAFE will receive influx of students, who will study bricklaying and wall and floor tiling.  The number of places for these courses are very limited.  It is highly recommended that you apply early to avoid disappointment. Please note VisaMaster is an accredited education agent for Holmesglen.  Please contact us if you are interested in studying these courses.  Email: or call 1800 my VISA.
